The destruction of hard drives is considered recommended by the NSA. Degaussing is the required method for making sure information cannot be recovered when best-practices compliance is mandatory. NSA Requirements for Hard Drive Destruction
The easiest way to satisfy the NSA requirement is to cause a deflection in the drive’s platters. This can be accomplished with a hard drive punch or a crushing device when degaussing isn’t an option. These machines are best suited for lower volume situations. IT departments, smaller companies, hospitals, school districts…all benefit. All these require minimal effort on the user’s part where a hammer or sledge requires physical exertion for hard drive destruction but doesn’t guarantee total data erasure.
Hard drive shredders are great for data centers, large corporations, e-cyclers, and educational institutions when many hard drives need to be destroyed. HD shredders have a larger footprint and have greater electrical requirements. They use large motors and heavy-duty shredder heads to accomplish their task. The 104/2 HD shredder can destroy up to 750 hard drives per hour on regular 120V with a dedicated 20-amp outlet. Our 104/3 will chew through 1250 hard drives in an hour.
