QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Is the Basic Specs of the 32MSR-SL Shredder Bin NIST SP 800-88 compliant? Considering it to store hard drives until they can be destroyed.

Unfortunately NIST does not list approved secure containers. It demands that any containers be lockable, have tamper evident controls, and controlled access. The 32MSR-SL is indeed lockable, its narrow slot allows material to go in but would be very difficult for a hand to take anything out, and it has a key lock which provides controlled access. Therefore it satisfies all of NIST's requirements.

I would recommend you look into a degausser like the Proton T-1. Storage is a risk, and a small degausser would allow you to magnetically destroy hard drives as soon as they are decommissioned at a very low price. Degaussing is also NIST compliant so subsequent physical destruction becomes an optional step.
